School Officials Select New High School Design
The final design for the new Tucumcari High School has been selected. Teachers, school board, and community have given their input on the design of the school. The project, designed by Greer Stafford SJCF Architecture firm from Albuquerque has estimated the cost to be $21 million and will be completed in three phases. Phase one of construction is estimated to start in October. Elementary School Web Page Click on the picture of the elementary school to see the new web page. The Tucumcari Middle School and High School chapters of FCCLA (Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America) did very well this year at their state meeting and competition, which was held March 13-15 in Albuquerque, NM. 19 students (12 High School and 7 Middle School) were able to attend. At the general opening session, Tucumcari Middle School was recognized for being the first middle school chapter to affiliate this year, and Jodie Lamm, who is the Advisor for both the middle school and high school chapters, was recognized and given a certificate in honor of this being the 20th year that she has been a FCCLA Advisor. In addition to the meetings and workshops that the students attended, they participated in various competitions. In FCCLA, the competitions are called STAR Events, with STAR standing for “Students Taking Action with Recognition”. Students are judged against a set of criteria, and are given a medal based on their score. A gold medal is a score of 90-100, a silver medal is a score of 70-89, and a bronze medal is a score below 70. 7th, 8th, and 9th graders compete in the Jr. category, and 10th, 11th, and 12th graders compete in the Sr. category. Some of the available competition events are unique to New Mexico, and are called State Level Events. In these events: TMS - Sonam Bhakta and Kassidi Ulibarri – Crudités Tray, Jr. – Silver medal – 2nd place THS - Megan Evans - Crudités Tray, Sr. – Silver medal – 7th place THS – Felicia Lopez - Decorated Cake, Sr. – Silver medal – 2nd place THS – Tonya Branch and Jessica Beltran - Fashion Apparel Display, Sr. – Bronze medal – 3rd place THS – Beth Romero - Designer’s Challenge, Sr. - Gold medal - 1st place Other competition events are the same throughout the United States, and are called National Level Events. In these events: TMS – Kierra Proctor, Bethany Bishop, and Jenna Morris – Illustrated Talk, Jr. – Silver, 4th place TMS – Carri Harmon and Michelle Fazekas - Chapter Showcase Manual, Jr. – Bronze, 3rd place THS – Haley Binkley and Alyssa Arellano – Focus On Children, Sr. – Gold, 2nd place THS – Katrina Calbert – Job Interview, Sr. - Silver, 3rd place, and a $500 Scholarship to Johnson & Wales University. THS – Cecilia Holguin – Job Interview, Sr. – Silver, 2nd place, and a $750 Scholarship to Johnson & Wales University. THS – Katie Lamm – Recycle & Redesign, Jr. – Gold, 1st place, and eligible to compete and represent Tucumcari at the National FCCLA meeting in Orlando, Florida this summer. THS – Sharayah Sisneros and Holly Binkley – Entrepreneurship, Jr. – Silver, 1st place, and eligible to compete and represent Tucumcari at the National FCCLA meeting this summer. This is the first time that Tucumcari has had anyone qualify to go to the national FCCLA meeting through competitions in at least 11 years. All of the competitions have to be worked on outside of class time, so those who compete put in a lot of time and effort. Students choose projects that interest them, and the research and work they do is like “Directed Study” or “Enrichment Activities”. Mrs. Lamm says that she is “proud of how all of the students did this year”, and wanted to acknowledge their hard work and effort, as well as the support and encouragement of the parents. FFA State Public Speaking Keanette Perkins and Hannah Norton represented Tucumcari FFA Chapter at the State Championships for Middle School Public Speaking in Albuquerque on February 16, 2008. Keanette placed 3rd in Illustrated Speech, and Hannah 3rd in Prepared Speaking. Eighty three schools statewide completed in district contests, with students from 32 schools forwarding to the State Finals. Please congratulate these two young ladies. Festival Románico was held February 22, 2008 at ENMU in Portales. The activities give students from the Panhandle and Eastern New Mexico the opportunity to get together and share their talents. The program is designed to encourage students in secondary Spanish programs to investigate and preserve the Spanish culture. The competitions are divided into three levels (1st, 2nd, & 3rd year Spanish) for Native and Non-native speakers. The activities accommodate all of the learning styles. The categories include: Dramatics—groups of 2-6 students presenting skits Oral recitation of prose and poetry Talent show—individual or group Written compositions Videos compiled and produced by students We had thirty-one students participate in the activity. Many of the students weren’t able to make the trip to Portales because of prior school and personal commitments. Thirteen schools and approximately 400 students participated. We had two students place in the Native competition: María Gallardo, 3rd place in Level III composition, and Liliana Araiza, 3rd place in Level I composition. We intend to participate annually in the activity, thus giving the students an opportunity to develop an appreciation of the Hispanic culture, and give the Hispanic students an avenue to help preserve their heritage. There will be art competitions in posters, models, and crafts. Spanish skits and recitations will have two divisions, native speaker and non-native speaker. The writing competition will take place prior to the day of the Festival. Certificates will be awarded to individual student winners, and trophies will be given to the winning (sweepstakes) school and runner-up school. For more information please contact Jesse Davis at the THS.
